Background When Indian Premier League (IPL) was only three years into its existence, they approached ICD to design their website to capture the spirit of the tournament, update readers with IPL news, announce schedules and sell tickets online.
By this time, IPL was synonymous with T20 cricket, a new face of cricket with International players, metropolitan teams, and a glamorous, larger-than-life image. It offered, to millions of fans, an adrenaline rush of thrillers played out against the night sky, in stadiums, on TV, and now, on the web.
Approach IPL changed the image of cricket: making it a premium evening out. The experience is family entertainment as much as serious competitive sport. It is as much about treating spectators as paying customers, as about the on-field action.
The site needed to reflect that break from the past, far removed from the somewhat basic stadiums and staid image that cricket typically represented. The same could be said of the web presence of sport events in India. Our approach to the problem was to bring alive the excitement of the game from the cricket field to the desktop.
Design Inspired by the game’s look on field, we captured the vibrancy, colour codes and youthful language in the site design. Widgets, sections and pages were designed to respect the content, and yet engage and excite the audience. A perfect go-to for all cricket lovers before, after or during the games to access statistics, read news, catch up with photos, get detail analysis and data on every team, see the fixtures and join fan clubs.
Great care to details like ticketing, fixture information, news, leaderboard were all typographically and graphically crafted for utmost readability and impact.
Impact Designed in the non-responsive era, the site got great traffic and response. It served as the benchmark for future development on the IPL site.
